The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is part of a complicated network of tendons and ligaments which help stabilize and support the knee. These structures are particularly vulnerable to injury during athletic activity or as the result of impact. Tears of the anterior cruciate ligament are quite common, with between 70,000 to 80,000 reported each year in the United States.
